Can’t Be Bothered Exercising? – 4 Good Reasons Why You Should
You may have heard someone saying to someone else “Oh, you don’t need to go to the gym – you’re skinny”. You may have even met people that believe that because they are of normal body weight they somehow don’t need to exercise. It’s as if you have to be overweight and out of shape to qualify for the benefits of improved strength and fitness.
But what many people don’t realize is that exercise has many benefits for maintaining a healthy body and mind no matter what sort of shape you are in. Here are four of those benefits so we can remind ourselves of the importance of our exercise program.
1. Reducing body fat – Regular exercise helps lower stores of body fat as even if you are thin you can be still storing too much of your current weight as fat. The higher your percentage of body fat the greater your risk is of a “chronic lifestyle disease”. These preventable diseases include the ‘big three’ heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Proper exercise helps bring dangerous levels of body fat down to a healthy range.
2. Increase your muscle tissue – Without regular strengthening and toning exercise, your body will not have the shape or tightness that most people desire. Firm, toned muscles, tighter skin and less soft flabbiness are all a result of working out.
Skip the workouts and you will have less muscle tone, more fat and a less shapely figure. More toned muscle tissue also means a faster metabolism as well (your body’s engine). This means you will be burning more fuel (calories) every minute of the day and night.
3. Counter the loss of muscle tissue after the mid 20′s – Unless we continue to work our muscles on a regular basis we lose them at a rate of around one half pound each year. This rate doubles after age 50 and is the cause of the weakness and frailty that can accompany the aging process.
This loss means a weakening of the entire body and all of its systems and processes. The immune system is also weakened leaving you exposed to life threatening premature and preventable disease. The bottom line – Keep your muscles strong by working them often and keep your whole body strong and disease resistant as well.
4. Guard your mental health and wellbeing – A great way to tackle ‘the blues’ or even the more serious mental sta

te of depression is through regular vigorous exercise. Many people who begin an exercise program to become healthier or lose some weight soon realize the wonderful added benefit improved strength and fitness has on their state of mind.
Work out on a regular basis and enjoy the effects of the body’s own mood elevating endorphins and when these powerful natural calming chemicals kick in chances any stress or depression is chased right away. You will feel good about yourself and your lot in life and you can become the person you would like to be.
There is so much to gain from your exercise program. You can never go wrong by it and you will find you will get ten times more back from it than you put in. A win win situation all around wouldn’t you agree?
